How to Upgrade Your Outdoor Furniture Cushions

An outdoor seating area is a great way to entertain friends or simply enjoy a beautiful day. But furniture cushions that feel uncomfortable and look worse can detract from the experience. Luckily, you have a lot of options when it comes to upgrading and restoring outdoor cushions. Our experts have looked at how to update outdoor furniture cushions so people actually look forward to using them.

Outdoor Replacement Cushions

Cushions that are deteriorated and sagging should naturally be replaced. You can make your own outdoor cushions or purchase them from FoamOrder.com. In either case, there are a couple of things to keep in mind as you shop.

When getting replacement cushions for outdoor furniture, we generally recommend an open-cell foam. Some people think they should get a closed-cell foam that resists water intrusion. But if and when water does get into these foams, it’s very hard to get out. Water can also end up trapped between the foam and cover, leading to mold and mildew. Open-cell foam, on the other hand, lets water drain easily so the cushions dry fast.

You’ll also need to consider the foam density. Many manufacturers use 1.2 lb./ft.³ density foam for outdoor cushions replacement, which is prone to compression and “bottoming out.” We use 1.8 lb./ft.³ density foam that offers more support while still being comfortable. You can go denser, especially for seat cushions, but it might compromise the foam’s drainability.

Outdoor Cushion Covers

Replacing the cushion covers, whether with or without new foam, is a great way to update the style of your seating. It also gives the foam more protection from the elements if the current covers are worn and faded.

Like with cushion foam, you can purchase pre-made covers or make your own. The biggest key when choosing covers for replacement patio cushions is to use a water-resistant fabric such as our Sunbrella® covers or marine vinyl. This reduces the chances of damage to both the cover and the foam.

Other Ways to Improve Outdoor Seating

Even if you’re happy with the current foam and cover, there are still things you can do to upgrade the cushion. Consider these ways to make your cushions more comfortable, stylish and durable.

  • Add fabric sealant to your cushion covers. These products offer another layer of protection against moisture as well as damage from sun rays and drink spills.
  • If your cushions have a loose fill, shake them out regularly. It’s easy for loose fills to get compacted, so shaking them out will restore much of the original comfort.
  • You also should clean your cushions every week or two to prevent dirt build-up, as dirt is basically a buffet for the fungi that cause mold and mildew. Most water-resistant fabrics can be cleaned using warm water mixed with liquid laundry detergent and a clean washcloth or sponge.
  • Store your cushions inside or in a container when not in use. Although outdoor fabrics are water-resistant, they are not waterproof, so protecting cushions from sudden rain storms will help them last.
