Which foam and thickness is best for Barstool Cushions?

Bar stool cushions are usually only 1–2 inches thick, and usually require a high resiliency foam that can last a long time. As a result, we recommend our Everflex V54 for firm bar stool cushions, and V44 for medium-firm bar stool cushions.

Should I order dacron (polyester) batting for my bar stool cushions?

Bar stool cushions often do not require dacron batting. While we generally do recommend batting to give seat cushions a fuller, more luxurious look (not to mention a more padded and comfortable feel), it’s not always necessary for a bar stool cushion. Just be aware that without dacron batting, your cushion will be more “squared off” and look a little less padded and full than it would with batting. Also, the thinner the cushion (2 inches or less) the more that batting will help it provide a little extra cushion that might make your bar stool cushion more comfortable.

Can I get replacement cushions for my existing bar stools?

Yes. Measure your current seat or the old cushion, choose the matching shape, and we cut new foam to those dimensions. Every cushion is cut to within 1/4 inch of your measurements. You can order foam only to slip inside your existing covers, or add new custom-sewn covers at the same time.

How do I measure a bar stool seat for a cushion?

Round seats: measure the diameter straight across the widest point. Square seats: measure width side to side and depth front to back. Seats with a raised rim or recessed well: measure inside the rim so the cushion sits flat. Saddle, horseshoe, or curved seats: trace the seat on paper, choose Pattern Shape, and mail the pattern to us. We cut the foam to match it. Our measuring guide walks through each shape.

How thick should a bar stool cushion be?

Most bar and counter stool cushions are 2 to 3 inches thick. Two inches keeps a low profile on stools with a backrest or footrest set close to the seat. Three inches gives a plusher seat for long sits at a kitchen island. Before you go thicker, check that your knees will still clear the underside of the counter, and if your stool has a rim, keep the cushion close to the rim height so it stays put.

What type of foam is best for a bar stool cushion?

A bar stool seat is small, so your full weight presses into a few square inches of foam. Choose a foam firm enough that you don't sink through to the hard seat underneath: 2 inches thick or less: choose firmer EverFlex V54. 2 to 3 inches, everyday use: EverFlex V44 is our standard pick, a medium-firm, high-resilience foam with a 2.8 lb/ft³ density. Occasional use: EconoFlex is a lower-cost option. All-natural: choose organic latex with organic wool batting. Our indoor polyurethane foams are CertiPUR-US certified, and our organic latex is GOLS certified.

Are counter stool cushions different from bar stool cushions?

Only the stool height is different. Counter stools are usually 24 to 26 inches tall and bar stools 28 to 30 inches, but the seat cushions are measured and ordered the same way. Choose your shape, enter your seat dimensions, and the cushion fits either one.

What fabric is best for kitchen bar stool cushions?

Kitchen and bar stools see spills and constant on and off, so stain resistance matters most. Solution-dyed acrylics such as Sunbrella and performance fabrics wipe clean easily, and a zippered cover lets you remove it for washing. You can choose from more than 5,000 cushion fabrics, or send us your own material. You can also order fabric swatches to match your kitchen before you order.

How do I keep a bar stool cushion from sliding?

Start with a cushion cut to the exact size of the seat, since a snug fit leaves it less room to move. If your stool has a back, spindles, or legs close to the seat, add ties. We sew them from your cover fabric, you can choose 2 to 10 sets, and you tell us exactly where each set goes so the ties line up with your stool's frame. Backless stools have nothing to tie to, so for those we can add adhesive Velcro strips on request. Mention it in your order comments or call (415) 503-9314.

Should I add Dacron batting to a bar stool cushion?

Dacron (polyester) batting is optional. A single book wrap, our most common choice, softens the top while keeping the sides sleek, which suits square seats. Wrapping all sides crowns every edge for a plumper look, which suits round stools where the whole edge shows. On cushions 2 inches thick or less, Dacron adds a little extra softness, but we don't recommend a double wrap on thin cushions. Without any batting, the cushion will look more squared off.
