Frequently Asked Seat Cushion Questions

Which foam is best for Indoor Seat Cushions?

Seat cushions should be soft and comfortable, and should give a little, but not too much for most users. For our traditional polyurethan foam, start with our medium V44 Everflex foam for cushions between 4 and 6 inches thick. For organic seat cushions, We offer two main types of foam for indoor seat cushions; our traditional polyurethane (free of harmful chemicals), and our organic latex foam. Starting with the traditional polyurethane, we recommend our Everflex foam for couch cushions that will be used most days, and our lower-cost Econoflex foam for occasional use couch cushions in guest rooms or seldom-used areas. Most customers will be happy with our medium-firm V44 Everflex foam for couch cushions between 4 and 6 inches. If your couch cushion is thinner, you might consider firmer V54, and if thicker than 6 inches we generally recommend our softer V34. For latex foam, we recommend medium N31 or medium-firm N36 for standard thickness cushions. You can also select cushions using memory foam as a top layer above firmer polyurethane foam. Should I order dacron (polyester) batting for my seat cushions?

First, look at your existing cushions to see how they were built, and try to replicate the same use of dacron batting. FoamOrder recommends dacron batting for all polyurethane seat cushions, traditionally with a book wrap. A Dacron bookwrap gives an upholstered seat cushion a full, comfortable, rounded look. Without dacron batting your new or replacement seat cushions will likely show wrinkles in the fabric. For extra padding around your seat cushion or an extra-full look, use a double-dacron book wrap, or wrap all sides. We recommend our organic cotton or organic wool batting with an organic cotton wrap for our high-end organic latex cushions, to maintain the organic composition as well as to provide premium padding with your seat cushions. We guarantee you’ll feel the difference. If you really don’t want any dacron batting around your seat cushion, then order the foam 1/4" to 1/2" thicker than the case to make sure it fills in as much as possible.

How thick should seat cushions be?

When ordering seat cushions we recommend you keep the thickness of your cushions the same as the original so that you can use the slipcovers from the original couch. With new seat cushions, choose a thickness that will work within the design of the couch, normally between 4–6 inches. More than that is usually unnecessary, and thinner than 4" may lead to heavier users “bottoming out” and hitting the support materials below the cushions of the couch. The top of a seat cushion should generally be between 18" and 20" from the floor. Any taller than this and shorter people won’t be able to rest their feet comfortably on the floor.

Just like new.
“Replaced the saggy old cushions in our 2003 American Leather sofa and loveseat. I think we paid $7000 for the pair back then. The leather is still perfect, but the cushions were flattened and the down filled wrap had torn and was leaking feathers everywhere. we went couch shopping and found that to buy couches of similar quality, it would cost us almost $20k. Yikes! Decided to give cushion replacement a try, but couldn't find a local upholstery shop that wanted the job. Jumped on Google and found foamorder.com. The cushions were pretty pricey for foam and feathers (About $1000 for 5 large cushions). Super easy to order, turnaround in 3 weeks or so. After vacuuming feathers for hours, we got the couches reassembled and they look and feels like new again! We saved $12k with a little bit of effort on our part, We couldn't be more satisfied! We just ordered more cushions for to replace the floppy misshapen back cushions for another sofa and loveseat- can't wait to see the transformation again!”
