How to Replace the Foam Inside Your Couch Cushions

Chances are, your sofa doesn’t need replacing — it just needs a refresh! Swapping out the foam inserts in your couch cushions is an easy and effective way to transform saggy, flattened cushions into plush, comfortable seating once again.

It sounds easy enough, but getting the right replacement foam for couch cushions requires some thoughtful decision making. Follow these tips from our experts and your cushion-replacement project will be a breeze.

Step 1 - Check If Your Cushion Covers Are Removable Or Upholstered

First things first, make sure you can access the foam insert in your cushions. Not all cushion covers have a zipper or a velcro enclosure that allow you to access the cushion’s inner foam insert. If this is the case, you may want to consider a new couch or calling a local upholster to help.

If your cushion’s foam is accessible, you’re in luck! Move on to step 2!

Step 2 - Measure Your Cushion To Ensure a Perfect Fit

Once you’ve confirmed the foam insert is accessible, the next step is to measure your cushion accurately so it fits your existing cover and furniture properly.

Start by watching the video above, which walks you through the process of measuring your foam couch cushion step by step. Then, using a tape measure, record the cushion cover’s width, depth, and thickness from seam to seam. Avoid measuring the old foam itself, as it may have compressed or lost its original shape over time, leading to inaccurate dimensions.

For a snug fit, consider adding an extra inch to your measurements to ensure the foam fully fills the cover. If you’re still unsure, check out our detailed measuring guide for additional tips and guidance.

Ready to get your replacement cushion ordered? Choose your shape and enter your measurements to get started!

Don’t see the shape you need? No problem. Just choose “Pattern Shape” to make your own pattern and send it to us to cut to your exact pattern specifications.

Step 3 - Choose Foam Density: Balancing Value and Longevity

The next step is to decide on the foam density that strikes the right balance between your budget and how long you want your cushions to last. Foam density directly affects both the durability and cost of your replacement cushions.

For a Longer Lasting Cushion

If longevity is your priority, choose a higher-density foam (2.5–3.0 lbs./ft³ or above). These foams maintain their shape and support for 15–20 years, making them ideal for:

  • Everyday Use Furniture: Sofas, sectionals, or chairs that see heavy use.
  • High-Traffic Areas: Family rooms or shared spaces where durability is essential.
  • Supportive Seating: Seat cushions that need to withstand weight and prevent “bottoming out.”

For a Budget Friendly Cushion

Lower-density foam (1.8–2.0 lbs./ft³) is a more affordable option, typically costing about one-third as much as high-density foam. While it has a shorter lifespan of 3–5 years, it works well for:

  • Occasional Use Furniture: Guest room sofas or decorative chairs.
  • Lightweight Applications: Back cushions or furniture used primarily for lounging.
  • Budget-Conscious Projects: Cushions in areas where frequent replacement is acceptable.

Step 4 - Choose a Batting Option For Your Cushion

diagram showing what a foam replacement cushions looks like with and without dacron wrap

If your current cushions have batting, you’ll likely want to replicate the batting treatment so the new cushions fit the same way in your cushion covers. The most common type of batting is Dacron polyester batting in a “book wrap,” wrapped around three sides of the foam (top, front, bottom) like the cover of a book (as seen in the image above). FoamOrder also offers batting on all sides of your cushion, or double batting.

Without Dacron or polyester batting, your cushion may appear flat and saggy. Adding Dacron batting gives your cushion a fuller, more structured appearance, creating a subtle crowning effect for a plush and polished look.

Sofa Cushion Replacement Steps

Once you’ve ordered your new foam inserts from FoamOrder.com, ensuring the dimensions and batting replicate your original cushions, it’s time to replace the old foam. Follow these easy steps to restore your cushions:

  1. Remove the Old Foam
    • For cushions with removable covers, unzip and carefully turn the fabric inside out to extract the foam.
    • For upholstered cushions or couch back cushions attached to the frame, gently pull the foam out to avoid damaging the fabric or seams.
  2. Preserve the Batting (If Reusing)
    • If you plan to reuse the existing polyester batting, carefully peel it away from the old foam and set it aside.
  3. Prepare the New Foam
    • Spray an even layer of adhesive spray on all sides of the new foam to secure the batting in place.
  4. Wrap the Foam in Batting
    • Use new or saved batting and wrap it snugly around the foam. Ensure the adhesive holds the batting securely in place.
    • If necessary, trim excess batting using a serrated utility knife or fabric scissors for a clean fit.
  5. Insert the Wrapped Foam into the Cover
    • Carefully slide the foam into the cushion cover, ensuring a snug fit. Work slowly to avoid tearing the fabric or batting.

Optional Tip: Before inserting the foam, spray the batting with a light layer of textile-grade silicone spray. This prevents static cling, reduces stickiness, and makes it easier to maneuver the foam into the cover.

By following these steps, your sofa cushions will look and feel as good as new, delivering both comfort and style.
