DIY Pet Bed: Create Your Own Dog Bed with Foam

Dog owners know that pups are like family — and that means giving them a comfortable bed like other family members. Taking the time to create a homemade DIY dog bed using foam is far superior to just using an old blanket or pillow. Your pooch will be able to sleep better and have more energy for the next day. Foam beds are even more important for older dogs with joint troubles or bony dog breeds like greyhounds and Doberman pinschers.

Whether you’re just brought a new canine home or need to replace a bed that’s been chewed to shreds, the experts at FoamOrder.com can help you make a foam DIY dog bed or travel cushion. Follow these tips to choose the right materials and turn them into a long-lasting bed.

Selecting and Cutting Your Foam

You can make a polyurethane, 100% organic latex or memory foam dog bed. High-resilience polyurethane foam is the most affordable option and is available in softer firmness levels, which is great for small dogs and cats. It also has more airflow for pets that overheat.

Latex and memory foam are firmer and last longer. Organic latex is a good choice for any pets that have allergies and is the most durable material. Just make sure the latex is 100% natural to avoid dangerous chemical exposure. Memory foam is most commonly used because it adapts to your pet’s size and shape while being orthopedic for senior canines. However, it is known to trap heat.

A stack of foam sheets

Once you’ve chosen a foam type, you’ll need a sheet of it. A mattress topper is a great choice for pet beds, and larger toppers can often be used to make multiple beds. Just remember that, like humans, large pets require thicker and firmer foam. If you have a thinner foam sheet and a larger pet, you can cut two pieces and use spray adhesive to stick them together. An optional Dacron or quilt batting cover will add padding if needed.

Pet Bed Covers

You can make a pet bed casing using medium-heavy fabric, shears and a sewing machine. There are a few types of coverings to consider. A permanent or non-removable pet bed cover is sewn directly over the foam. This makes it harder for a dog to chew up the foam — but it’s also harder to clean.

If you want a removable cover for care purposes, you can choose a zippered or envelope-style case. Zipper pet bed covers offer more foam protection but can be prone to jamming and breakage. Envelope bed casings are the easiest to make but leave the foam exposed. Regardless of the cover type, look for fabrics that are water-resistant and washable, and leave a half-inch seam tolerance on each side.

Though not required, you can also add a DIY dog bed frame or platform. This protects the flooring and establishes your dog’s sleeping quarters. You should use hardwood such as solid oak and be careful not to leave any sharp edges or hardware exposed.
