When purchasing a seat and back cushion set together, it’s important to know that they should usually have two different foam types. That’s because all of your weight rests on the seat cushion, requiring firmer foam. The back cushion only bears some of your weight, so you want softer foam for the back. FoamOrder’s ordering system walks you through the ordering process, allowing you to specify if your cushion will be used for a back or seat cushion, and recommending the right foam for soft, medium, or firm comfort levels. We offer three grades of traditional polyurethane foam, from low-cost less dense foam that can be used in areas that get minimal use, to our top-quality HR (high resiliency) foam that’s recommended for everyday use. We also offer organic latex cushions for the eco-minded, and a variety of cushion treatments from dacron polyester to organic wool or cotton batting to down and poly envelopes. Seat and back cushions should have the same quality of foam (Everflex, Duraflex, or Econoflex), but should have different firmness. Back cushions should generally be softer (less firm) than seat cushions, since they don’t support your full body weight like seat cushions. For cushions in high-use areas, we recommend our 20-year Everflex, while for low-use cushions (in a guest room or low-traffic area of your home) Econoflex grade should be fine. The firmness of your foam should depend on the comfort level you desire, as well as the thickness of the cushion. The thinner the cushion, the more firm the foam should be to provide adequate support for seating or resting your back.
