Frequently Asked Back Cushion Questions

Which foam is best for Indoor Back Cushions?

Back cushions generally require different foam than seat cushions. We generally recommend our Everflex V24 for everyday use, or our Econoflex C25 for more limited use back cushion locations. Back cushions should be soft and comfortable, and should allow your body to sink into the comfort of the cushion. For organic latex back cushions, we recommend our soft N25, or medium N28 for a slightly firmber back cushion. We also generally don’t recommend using memory foam for back cushions, as they don’t provide adequate back support. Feel free to contact our customer service team if you need guidance while ordering.

Should I order dacron (polyester) batting for my back cushions?

FoamOrder generally recommends dacron batting in most cases, usually with a book wrap. However, to be sure you’re getting exactly what you’re looking for, take look at your existing back cushions to see how they were built, and try to replicate the same use of dacron batting or other filler material. A Dacron bookwrap gives an upholstered back cushion the full, comfortable, rounded look that you see in most interior furniture. Without it, your new or replacement back cushions won’t fill out, and will often show wrinkles in the fabric. For extra padding around your back cushion use a double-dacron book wrap, or wrap all sides. If you are looking for an even fuller look and extra comfort, check out our down or poly-fill cushion envelopes, or custom pillows for your back cushions. We guarantee you’ll feel the difference. If you really don’t want any dacron batting around your seat cushion, be sure to order the foam 1/4" to 1/2" thicker than the case to be sure it fills in as much as possible.

How thick should back cushions be?

Thickness for replacement back cushions should be the same as the original so that you can use the slipcovers from the original couch or chair. With new back cushions, choose a thickness that will work within the design of the couch or seat, normally between 3–5 inches. More than 5 inches is usually unnecessary, and thinner than 3 inches may not provide the back support that most users are looking for.
