Frequently Asked Outdoor Bench Cushion Questions

Which foam is best for outdoor bench cushions?

We recommend our outdoor (reticulated) dry-fast foam for outdoor bench cushions, usually in medium or firm, depending on how thick your cushion will be. If your bench cushion is 2 inches thick or less, we recommend firm, and thicker than that should use medium. Our outdoor foam has an open cell structure, which allows water to pass through the bench cushion rather than sit inside it, reducing the creation of mold and mildew. If your outdoor chair cushions will be in an area not directly exposed to the elements (a covered porch or cabana), then traditional polyurethane foam or organic latex foam can be used.

Should I order dacron (polyester) batting with my outdoor bench cushions?

FoamOrder recommends dacron batting for outdoor bench cushions, as well as other outdoor cushions. The dacron batting doesn’t interfere with the proper drainage of outdoor banch cushions, and gives your back cushions a fuller look and a bit of extra comfort. It also makes it easier to get your foam into and out of the covers, which is helpful if you’re going to wash your cushion covers (as we recommend).

How thick should outdoor bench cushions be?

If you are planning to sit on your outdoor bench cushion with your feet touching the floor, the top of the cushion should generally be between 18" and 20" when measuring from the floor. Any taller than this and some people won’t be able to rest their feet comfortably when seated. This usually means a 2–3 inch cushion thickness, depending on your furniture.
