Why Choose Natural Foam?

FoamOrder's organic latex product line is certified 100% all natural foam rubber, which means there are no added toxins—just tree sap and additive-free soaps used in the manufacturing process. Many companies advertise "natural" alternatives to conventional foam that actually contain artificial materials. Competitors with latex foam offerings generally use a blend of naturally and synthetically produced latex, and those with soy-based foams blend 5 to 35 percent soy with oil-based derivatives and flame retardants. Health Benefits: Because latex is innately fire resistant, we don't need to add any chemical flame retardants, allowing you to live in a healthier home. Latex is also hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. Environmentally Friendly: Rubber trees are unharmed during the tapping process; they continue to grow and live as sap is harvested. Comfort and Pain Management: FoamOrder's customers report decreased pain and pressure when they choose our latex foam mattresses and cushions. Durability: Latex foam is naturally tough and stays firm longer than conventional foam. With proper care, our product can last for 30 years.

What kind of batting is best for organic cushions?

FoamOrder offers several organic options for batting with organic cushions. We offer both organic cotton and organic wool batting with an organic cotton cover. For those less concerned with an all-natural solution, traditional dacron (polyester) batting can be used with our organic latex cushions as well. We also offer several options for (non-organic) down or polyester envelopes to make your organic latex cushions as comfortable as possible.

What about Latex Allergies?

Those with latex allergies should be careful with our organic cushions.

Organic Latex Cushion FAQs

What is organic latex foam?

Organic latex foam is made from the sap of rubber trees that are grown and tapped without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Our organic latex cushions are cut from Dunlop latex sourced from Sri Lanka and certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), so the foam is 100% natural rubber with no synthetic latex blended in.

Is natural latex the same as organic latex?

Not always. “Natural latex” is an unregulated term, and many foams sold as natural are a blend of natural and synthetic latex. Soy-based “eco” foams often contain only 5 to 35 percent soy, with the rest made from petroleum-based polyurethane. Organic latex carries a third-party certification such as GOLS, which verifies both the organic sourcing of the rubber and how the foam is made.

What is the difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex?

Dunlop and Talalay are the two ways latex foam is made. Dunlop latex is poured into a mold and baked, which produces a dense, supportive foam that holds its shape well under the constant weight a seat cushion takes. Talalay adds vacuum and freezing steps that make a lighter, springier foam, and it typically includes synthetic additives. Our organic cushions use Dunlop latex.

Why choose natural latex over conventional cushion foam?

Conventional polyurethane foam is made from petroleum, and many brands add chemical flame retardants. Our organic latex is made from tree sap and additive-free soaps, with no chemical flame retardants added. Latex also resists dust mites, mildew, and mold, and its open-cell structure lets air move through the cushion so it sleeps and sits cooler than dense memory foam.

Rubber trees are not cut down to harvest sap. They keep growing and producing for years, and natural rubber breaks down far more readily than petroleum foam at the end of its life.

How long do organic latex cushions last?

Natural latex resists breakdown and body impressions better than conventional foam, and a well-cared-for organic latex cushion can keep its shape for up to 20 years. Keep it in a cover and out of direct sunlight, since UV light is what ages latex fastest.

Can I use organic latex cushions if I have a latex allergy?

Use caution. Natural latex contains the plant proteins that cause latex allergies. A sewn fabric cover keeps the foam from touching your skin, which is enough for many people with mild sensitivities, but anyone with a diagnosed latex allergy should check with their doctor first. If latex is not an option, our other indoor cushion foams are latex free.

Does natural latex foam have a smell?

New natural latex can have a light, sweet scent from the rubber sap. It is not a chemical odor, and it fades within a few days to a couple of weeks. Letting the cushion air out in a well-ventilated room speeds this up.

What batting and covers go with organic latex cushions?

For a fully natural cushion, wrap the latex in organic cotton or New Zealand wool batting secured with organic muslin. Batting softens the edges and gives the cover a fuller, crowned look. If an all-natural build is less important to you, you can also choose polyester (Dacron) batting or a down or polyester envelope for a softer, plusher feel.

Can I use organic latex cushions outdoors?

No. Organic latex cushions are made for indoor furniture. Sunlight and standing moisture break down natural latex, so for patios, porches, and boats choose outdoor cushions made with quick-drying foam and outdoor fabric.

What shapes and sizes can you make organic latex cushions in?

We cut organic latex cushions to your exact measurements for sofas, chairs, benches, window seats, daybeds, and bar stools. Choose from rectangles, rounds, bolsters, trapezoids, curved chair seats, multi-sided polygons, and tri-fold cushions. If your seat has an irregular shape, choose the chair pattern option and send us a paper template to cut from.
