A FoamOrder custom dog bed is built one decision at a time. Open any step below to see exactly what you control, from the foam core out to the zipper.
Every dog bed is cut to your numbers, never rounded to a stock size. Here’s how to measure for the most common setups:
Not sure how to measure? See our How to Measure for Foam Cushions guide.
Heavier dogs compress foam further, so the right firmness depends more on your dog’s weight than on their breed. Density (lb/ft³) drives how long the foam lasts, and firmness is rated by ILD (Indentation Load Deflection). The higher the ILD number, the firmer the bed.
Our traditional indoor foams are open-cell polyurethane, free of fire-retardant chemicals. Use your dog’s weight to find a starting point:
| Dog weight | Suggested thickness | Suggested starting foam |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 lb | 3 to 4 in | V34 EverFlex (medium) |
| 25 to 60 lb | 4 to 5 in | V44 EverFlex (firm) |
| 60 to 100 lb | 5 to 6 in | V44 or V54 EverFlex (firm to extra-firm) |
| Over 100 lb | 6 in or more | V54 EverFlex (extra-firm) |
A bed that’s too soft or too thin lets a heavy dog sink through to the floor, which defeats the purpose of a supportive bed. Because most dogs use their bed every day, we recommend our premium EverFlex line for durability. EconoFlex works well for a travel bed or a spare bed that sees occasional use.
Memory foam contours slowly to your dog’s body. It works best as a top layer over a firmer base, which is a popular choice for senior dogs and dogs who seem stiff when they get up.
GOLS-certified organic latex is naturally breathable and resilient. Medium-firm N36 or firmest N45 suits most dogs.
A Dacron (polyester batting) wrap rounds the edges of the foam and fills out the cover so it stays snug instead of shifting and bunching. We recommend a book wrap on every dog bed with a sewn cover.
Choose a fabric that can handle claws, fur, and muddy paws. When browsing, filter for these:
Want to feel the fabric first? Order swatches for $1.99 to $5.99 each. You can also skip the cover and order foam only, or send us your own fabric and we’ll sew the cover from it.
Want to see what’s available first? Browse upholstery fabric by the yard.
For dog beds, we suggest placing the zipper along the back edge. It stays out of the way of paws and teeth, and it makes removing the cover for washing easy.
Overlocking finishes the inside fabric edges so they can’t fray or unravel, which matters on a cover that gets washed often.
Welt cording gives a tailored, reinforced edge.
Top stitching gives a flatter edge with less for a curious dog to grab.
Anchor a dog bed on a bench, window seat, or truck seat so it stays in place.
Every one of these is yours to set, and every custom dog bed is still cut to order in the U.S.
Measure your dog while they’re lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, then add 6 to 12 inches to that length and width. If your dog sleeps curled up, a round bed or a slightly smaller rectangle often works. For a crate bed or kennel pad, skip measuring your dog and measure the inside of the crate floor instead.
The best foam for a dog bed depends mostly on your dog’s weight. Small dogs under 25 pounds do well on medium V34 EverFlex, dogs from 25 to 60 pounds on firm V44, and large or giant breeds on V44 or extra-firm V54. For senior dogs, a memory foam top layer over a firmer base adds contouring comfort without letting them sink too far.
A layered bed isn’t a single option on our site yet, so call us at (415) 503-9314 to order one, or order the memory foam and support foam as two pieces with the same length and width and ask us to glue them together in your order comments.
Most dog beds should be 3 to 6 inches thick, with thicker beds for heavier dogs. Small dogs are comfortable on 3 to 4 inches, while dogs over 60 pounds usually need 5 to 6 inches or more so they don’t bottom out on the floor.
Yes. If your dog bed cover is still in good shape and the foam has gone flat, choose foam only and enter the cover’s measurements from seam to seam. We’ll cut a new dog bed foam insert to fit your existing cover.
For a budget-friendly refill of a pillow-style or bolster dog bed, try our shredded foam. It works best in covers that were loosely stuffed to begin with, rather than beds built around a solid foam slab.
Yes. Measure the inside of the crate or kennel floor and subtract about 1/2 inch from the length and width so the pad fits without buckling. If you have a plastic or hard-sided travel kennel, measure only the flat part of the floor, since the walls often angle inward near the bottom. A thinner pad, around 2 to 4 inches, usually works best so your dog still has headroom.
Many plastic kennels also have rounded corners. For an exact match, choose the pattern shape option and send us a template of the kennel floor. For a simpler option, note in your order comments that you’d like rounded corners, and we’ll round each corner to our standard curve. That curve can’t be made more subtle or deeper through order comments, so use a template if your kennel’s corners need a closer match.
Many owners choose memory foam for older dogs because it contours to the body and spreads out pressure. We recommend memory foam as a top layer over a firmer support foam, since a bed made entirely of memory foam can let heavier dogs sink too far.
To order a layered bed, call us at (415) 503-9314, or add one memory foam piece and one support foam piece to your cart with matching length and width. Then note in your order comments that you’d like them glued together, and keep in mind that the bed’s total thickness is the two pieces combined.
No foam dog bed is chew proof, and we’d rather tell you that up front. If your dog is a chewer, choose a tough, tightly woven or coated fabric, place the zipper along the back edge, and choose top stitching over welt cording. Supervise heavy chewers with any bed, and call your vet right away if your dog swallows any foam, since swallowed foam of any kind can cause a blockage.
You can always wash the cover, and with outdoor foam you can wash the whole bed. Choose a zippered, removable cover and check the care instructions for your fabric before washing. If you want a dog bed you can fully clean, choose our outdoor foam. It’s an open-cell foam built to drain and dry quickly, so you can rinse the foam itself with a hose and let it air dry, which makes it a good choice for outdoor kennels and dog runs. Our indoor foams aren’t made to get soaked, so spot clean those instead. Outdoor performance fabrics and vinyl are the easiest covers to keep clean between washes.
Our indoor foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they’re made without PBDE, TDCPP, or TCEP flame retardants, formaldehyde, mercury, lead, or other heavy metals, and are tested for low VOC emissions. Our organic latex is GOLS-certified. You can review our Product Certifications and Safety Data Sheets for full details on each foam.
Foam-only orders, such as replacement inserts, ship in about 3 to 14 days. Dog beds with a sewn cover take about 4 to 6 weeks because each cover is cut and sewn to order.
Design a custom dog bed cut to the size, shape, and firmness your dog needs, from a crate mattress to a window seat bed.
Most dog beds come in three or four sizes, and your dog rarely fits neatly into any of them. A custom dog bed from FoamOrder starts with your measurements instead. Every bed is cut to order in the U.S., so it can fill a crate wall to wall, fit the corner of a mudroom, or stretch across the cargo area of your SUV.
You choose the shape, the foam, the thickness, and the cover. We build the bed around the way your dog actually sleeps, whether that's curled in a tight circle or sprawled out across the floor. Already have a dog bed with a good cover and flat foam? You can order a replacement foam insert on its own.
Don’t see the shape you need? No problem. Just choose “Pattern Shape” to make your own pattern and send it to us to cut to your exact pattern specifications.
